Copy Editing and Proofreading

Copy editing ensures the correctness, accuracy, consistency, and completeness of any document, according to Editors Canada's Professional Editorial Standards (2024). This includes checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency and continuity of facts and citations, querying information, checking links, Canadianizing or other localizations, developing a style sheet or following one that is provided, and much else. I also have experience understanding when certain standardized rules should be broken, as was the case when I copy edited a poetry manuscript written in African American Vernacular English.

Proofreading is the process of checking material once it has been designed or typeset. It is the final check before publishing, whether digitally or in print, and it is not intended to be a substitute for editing. Proofreading ensures adherence to design, factual consistency, the absence of minor mechanical errors, copy fitting, the correctness of design elements (such as page numbers, headings, cross references, etc.), and more.

I have experience copy editing and proofreading varied communications products, including internal and external communication, manuals, newsletters, blog posts, website copy, academic work, poetry, memoir, and experimental work. I take time to understand the nuances and requirements of each project that crosses my desk to ensure its unique needs are met.

"Her editing style is perfect, and I highly recommend her to anyone interested in working with someone thoughtful and professional, who also has an outstanding ability to edit at the highest level, and yet insightful enough to protect your voice."
