Non-fiction Editing

As a substantive editor, I once helped a writer develop a collection of numerical data into a narrative about a city’s historical development; in another case, I helped an academic transform the narrative of their research expedition—technical terms and all—into a literary essay. In yet another, I wove a series of disconnected creative non-fiction essays into a cohesive memoir with a beginning, middle, and end that was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize.

As a copy editor, I have years of experience wrestling non-fiction works into polished drafts that are consistent, accurate, correct, and complete, according to Editors Canada's Professional Editorial Standards (2024). I have experience adhering to specific stylesheets and style guides, including the late Gregory Younging's Elements of Indigenous Style, as well as experience understanding when it's important to break the rules. Such was the case when I edited a manuscript written in African American Vernacular English.

Traditional memoirs, narrative non-fiction, hybrid or experimental memoirs, auto-ethnographic academic work, memoirs with a message—however you might like to call it, I thrive when I edit work that fits within the broad category of "non-fiction." I would be thrilled to work with you on your non-fiction project.

"When I began working on editing my manuscript with developmental editor Holly Vestad, I felt I had truly arrived in the most capable hands in the publishing industry. Holly’s sensitivity, efficiency, and genuine interest in my story, her guidance, her patience, and her unique ability to make my story flow to engage the reader, never failed to amaze me. Holly played with my manuscript as though she was fine tuning a precious instrument, and she played it so beautifully, I hope the world will want to listen."
