Reader's Reports

A reader's report is a three-page-minimum report that outlines the strengths and weaknesses of a manuscript. The report will cover everything I deem important to bring up about the integrity of the document, though I can also answer specific questions. I offer reader's reports for non-fiction manuscripts specifically.

Reader's reports are helpful for individual writers and publishing houses. As a writer, you might feel you've become too close to your writing to see it clearly. You might need help answering specific questions about plot or argument development, or you might need help understanding what is unique and different about your manuscript, what it's doing that sets it apart. Writers are often notoriously bad at describing their own work (I say this with love!), so I can also produce language in the report that you can use directly in your query letters to publishers or agents. These reports function as cheerleading sessions, though they are still committed to honest, constructively critical feedback that is informed and actionable.

If you are an editor at a publishing house, I would be delighted to produce a report for a manuscript under review. Please get in touch.

"Holly helped me see things in my work and process that I couldn't see on my own. Her honesty and ability to 'push' me was refreshing. Our collaboration resulted in my stronger understanding of query letters and my own work. I will say that I had attended many Reedsy webinars about query letters, done my own investigation, read books, and stalked agents. But, without the help of an editorial review, I don't think I would have seen some of my specific, personalized gaps. I was hesitant to invest this money but I would do it again in a heartbeat... and you should consider it, too!"
